Sixteen Families In Warren County Are Living Ina Home Of Their Own that they helped build. Each of the 33 children of these parents can proudly
point to “My Own Home”.
Homeownership for these families was made possible through the Mutual Self-Help Homeownership Program sponsored by HANDS and
Rural Housing Services, USDA. Although the
Self-Help Homeownership Program has been in existence on a national level since 1971, Kentucky had not participated until 1998 when Housing Assistance aNd Development Services
(HANDS), a non-profit housing developer, was designated through USDA Rural Development to build 16 Mutual Self-Help homes
in Warren County. These 16 homes were built in three groups.
Patience, cooperation, and good fellowship are key characteristics required of families in the Self-Help Program, because
all families must work together closely and congenially to achieve their goal of homeownership. To fulfill the requirements of the Mutual Self-Help Program, all the families in the group must help with
construction of all the homes and all the homes must be completed before any can be occupied.
HANDS partnership
with Rural Housing Services, USDA, and availability of the 502 Home Loan funds made it possible for these low- or very-low-income
families to own “A Home Of Their Own” and feel the pride and self-esteem that homeownership instills.
